A 72-carat, flawless white diamond was on display in New York City on Tuesday, March 11 before heading to auction in Asia.
Sotheby’s auction house will hammer it off for $10 million to $12 million in the upcoming Asian sale, which would make it the most expensive diamond ever sold at auction in Asia.
The D-color, finest white stone is from a southern African mine. Sotheby’s says it will be the third largest “pear-shaped” stone ever auctioned globally.
Sotheby’s deputy Asia chairman and head of jewelry Quek Chin Yeow told Reuters, “In terms of quality it can’t get any better. Anything above 50 carats is a major stone. To find a rough of that size and quality and to be able to cut it into a perfect stone is really not an easy thing to.”
The sale of the stone on April 10 is likely to fetch $10 million to $12 million because of its size, symmetry and esteemed “Type IIA” rating, given only to the most brilliant of white D-color diamonds.
A lot of Asians are very discerning so they always want the best, and they don’t like to compromise on that.
